So, there I was, ready to end the kids party in Woodbridge Airborne as I had done hundreds of times. This time, I said to myself, “I’m going to end this party with a bang”. I wondered if I had it in me to actually lay the party guests down on the mat and attempt to do all the tricks my friends and I had tried, over actual people. I realized how stupid it sounded. Performing flips and tricks while having a nice soft mat to land on was one thing. Doing all these things with children and adults underneath you was another. If successful, this would be a show stopper. If unsuccessful, this was probably going to cost me my job. This was something never done before, especially not at a kids party in Woodbridge , Mississauga, or Newmarket Airbornes. I stumbled over my thoughts as to if i should or not, and I suppose my teenage angst got the best of me and I said to myself, “I’ve done this hundreds of times, this is not different than in practice.” It was decided!
I called a halt to the party, and asked all the guests to follow me to the middle of the trampoline deck for a special treat. They all did as instructed, clearly oblivious to what was in store for them. I asked them to lay down on the middle mats, side by side, and as close as I could get them. I turned on some high flying music (I was so nervous I cant even remember which song it was) and told everyone to 100%, absolutely not move! Everyone was looking at me wondering what I was about to do. I felt the gaze of 20 something eyes watching my every move. It was a exciting, and terrifying at the same time. Then I began jumping. Low at first, then higher, then even higher until I was almost hitting my head on the ceiling. As I started moving forward towards the guests who were on the end deck mat lying side by side in front of me, I could see their jaws drop as they realized what was about to happen. The look of amazement on their faces as they watched this teenage coach jumping nearly 14 feet in the air while coming towards them only encouraged me to keep going. As I reached the precipice of the trampoline, I remember saying to myself, “here we go, just like in training”. I took off from the edge of the trampoline and went straight into a Barani (which is simply a front flip with a half twist). I choose this trick because it allowed me to keep watching the guests laying on the mat below me. It all seemed like slow motion, watching as one face passed, then another, then another as I sailed over their heads. Before I knew it, my feet were hitting the bed of the trampoline. I quickly controlled my landing and calmed my bounce to give myself a second to breathe and figure out how it just went. I looked up and saw the wide eyed guests clapping and yelling at me to do it again. So I did, 4 more times with various tricks and spins for added effect. What seemed like 30 seconds turned out to be 5 minutes and the party was already long overdue to finish. As I stopped jumping and caught my breath I was attacked by steady stream of kids and parents asking me how I learned those tricks, and how long I’ve been doing this for. I answered as many questions as I could, all the while trying my best to start the next birthday party which was already late to start.
